Happy Workers’ Society PCW

The Happy Workers’ Society PCW Group of Susamachar Church is perhaps the oldest Women’s group in the Presbyterian Church of Trinidad&Tobago, with a distinguished record of service to the Church and community.

Informally established in 1887, the group got its name from a passing comment made by Dr. Grant, who happened upon Mrs. Grant and a group of ladies enthusiastically discussing a name for their group. “Why not Happy Workers?” he said! And so we are to this day .

As a group members are involved in a number of activities, with the main focus being : promoting fellowship and service among the women, deepening the spiritual life of members and engaging in charitable works to assist the church in fulfilling its mission.

Above all else, we have FUN while carrying out our commitments!!

Services for Sunday school are held every Sunday from 9.00 a.m. to 10.00 a.m. on the church’s compound. Sunday school starts with fellowship and worshiping together where children sing praises to God and learn about scripture through exciting lessons from the Bible that are engaging and interactive. After worship, the kids separate into different class levels where they do amazing crafts that build their knowledge of the Bible and their love of God.

THE SUSAMACHAR PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH MEN’S FELLOWSHIP

(A Brief History- Messrs. Michael and Kevin Ragbir)

It was under the leadership of the Rev. Allison Ken Nobbee, then resident Minister of the Susamachar Pastoral Region, who saw the wealth of the untapped talent among the men of the Church, and through the medium of an organized Men’s Group, sought to harness this talent productively founding the Susamachar Men’s Fellowship in 1987.

The first meeting was held on Tuesday 17th March, 1987 at 6.45pm with eighteen (18) members present. Rev. A.K. Nobbee served as pro tem Chairman, and Mr. Nandlal Bissessar as pro tem Secretary. From that first meeting the group was initiated and has steadily grown.

At that first meeting, the Aims and Objectives of the group were discussed, agreed upon and adopted. They are:
1. To further the concepts and principles of the Presbyterian Church of Trinidad and Tobago, and to abide by the constitution of that body.
2. To help uplift and maintain the physical structure of the Church and its environment.
3. To assist wherever possible, the Church and the Minister in their Spiritual duties
4. To plan and implement programs to increase the cultural, physical, social, and educational awareness of members.
5. To provide an avenue where men of the Church can provide a service to the Church in an organized and recognizable manner.

The first election of the Men’s Fellowship was held in May 1987, where Dr. Sterling Seuradge was elected as President. Other elected Presidents up to present time have been Messrs. Ronald Seepersad, Hubert Ramnarine, Steve Haneiph, Errol Baldeo, Michael Ragbir,

It was through the Susamachar Men’s Fellowship that the Susamachar Credit Union was established and registered on June 10th, 1990. It continues to grow numerically and financially.

Over the years there have been many sub-committees of the group which were established to offer assistance to the general church membership. Some of these committees were: Legal Advisory, Medical, Outreach, and Sports. The Sports Committee sought to bring the young people and groups of the church together in bonds of friendship and camaraderie. The Annual Football and Cricket competitions hosted by the group are two examples of such initiatives taken by the Men’s Fellowship over the years.

In 1999, the group’s Mission Statement, “To Serve and support the work of our Church, fostering meaningful and mutual support of its members and reaching out to support and assist the less fortunate of our society,” was established and underlines the original aims and objectives as decided upon two years prior.

The Men’s Fellowship is well-known for its Social Outreach Programs throughout other Pastoral Regions such as Medical Clinics, assisting with the Rebuilding and Renovating of Church Buildings, assisting the less fortunate, and assisting the residents of the J.C MacDonald Home for the Aged among others. We have also encouraged the young people of the Church- the Junior Choir to take an active part in reaching out and touching the lives of others as we cooperated with services that were held during the renovation of the Churches within the Cedros Pastoral Region and elsewhere.

The group also assists with the conduct of Worship Services, Ushering, Coffee Fellowship, Visitations, as well as other services when requested. The group also interacts with other similar groups in various Pastoral Regions offering guidance and assistance when needed. It should also be noted that many members of the group have served or are actively serving on the Local Board, and its Sub-committees, as well as, the Session of the Church.

Past and current annual events of the Group include our Curry Que or Bar-B-Que Fund-raising events, Member’s Retreats and Family Days, Concerts, as well as, activities of the Board of Men of the Presbyterian Church of Trinidad and Tobago.

Monthly meetings are held on every third Tuesday of the month at 6pm in the Conference Room. Anyone interested in joining or assisting the Men’s Fellowship can contact the Church’s Office or any member of the group for further information.

The Susamachar Men’s Fellowship continues to be a vibrant group of members who share a common bond of friendship, love and service to our fellowmen and to the Glory of God.

HISTORY OF THE HAPPY WORKERS’ SOCIETY

1887-2022

The Happy Workers’ Society was founded in 1887 when the late Mrs. Catherine Grant, wife of the revered founder of Susamachar Presbyterian Church gathered a number of women of the Church into a “Sewing Circle.”  Many children depended on the efforts of these women for the little garments, which would enable them to enjoy the privilege of attending both day and Sunday School.

One day, Reverend Dr. Grant, coming on the scene and noting how the women were happy in their labour of love as they were discussing a name for their Group, suggested the name “Happy Workers” and ‘Happy Workers’ we are up to this day.

The group’s Annual Bazaar, which takes place in the month of November, is one of their major projects.  Members of the Group take part in Worship Services, take up Offering, Greet and Usher on specific Sundays.  We also visit the sick and shut-in, especially the J.C. MacDonald Home for the Aged, have fellowship with the residents and provide a meal and gifts, and take part in Outreach Services in our Sister Churches.

The aims and objectives of our group are:-

  • To deepen the spiritual life of members. Devotions are conducted before every meeting.
  • To develop a liking for Christian Service among its members.
  • To assist the women of the Church to grow in the knowledge and love of God as we know Him in Jesus Christ.
  • To increase their knowledge, interest and loyalty to the Church and its mission
  • To co-operate as fully as possible in the work of the Church.

Our greatest hope as we journey onwards is that we will all re-dedicate ourselves to the service of God and in faith, we may continue in the building of the Kingdom of God on earth

History of 5th Naparima Scout Group

Founded in 1919 by Clarence Hamilton Gopaul Jr. some seven years after the scouting movement was formed in Trinidad and Tobago, Fifth Naparima is the second oldest Scout Group locally. This Group was the first in San Fernando and has been sponsored by the Susamachar Presbyterian Church since its inception and has provided accommodation and meeting grounds for the scouting activities to take place, many a time under the Peepal tree which is yet older than the Group. In 1930, the founder of the Scouting Movement, Lord Baden-Powell visited Trinidad to observe the implementation of scouting. He was hosted at the Princes Building Ground and 5th Naparima Scout Group were chosen to be the sole cook for the founder and the staff there. Our Cubs and Scouts have represented the Group across both the Caribbean and Continents of North America, Europe, and Asia. Our accolades include the copping of the prestigious South Trinidad Jamboree Flag on ten occasions between 1928 and 1949 followed by other awards too numerous to mention here. Some of our past Leaders include former Mayor of San Fernando – Clarence Gopaul, former District Commissioner – Claude Appleton, former Minister of Health – Roy Joseph, former sportsman – Mannie Ramjohn, and former National Scout Commissioner – Azamuddin Khan. Our Cubs and Scouts have also displayed musical talent by formation of the steelpan band, Scouts of Susamachar (SOS) in 2013 under the direction of George Poliah which continues to live on today.

Fifth Naparima Scout Group remained resilient even during the recent pandemic by seamlessly transitioning to virtual sessions on the scheduled Friday evenings and has also now transitioned back to physical meetings with the recent lifting of restrictions. A few of our typical activities include survival and camping skills, knot tying, first aid, hiking, marching, cooking, crafting, community service and volunteering.
